Joe Fan RSA (b 1962) graduated with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Fine Art from Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen and was elected as a Royal Scottish Academy Academician in 2003.
Joe’s compassionate, highly structured paintings are filled with delight and discovery. His densely packed, architectural gardens are playgrounds of imagination, exploring forces that nurture and define us. Meandering through these carefully tended, dreamlike spaces, punctuated with personal iconography, we come face to face with the human need for belonging and the power of free association.
Influenced by early Renaissance artists Giotto and Bellini, Arcadian landscapes and the work of Picasso and Cezanne, Joe Fan’s reconstructed worlds encourage the viewer to weave their own narratives. Joe’s exquisite Conte pencil drawings on handmade paper are an essential part of his practice, a process which he describes as ‘therapeutic, controlled, organic and automatic.’
Joe Fan's work is represented in public collections including The Scottish Arts Council Collection, Rank Xerox The Marlow Art Collection, Miller Homes Art Collection, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Grays School of Art, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Unilever Art Collection (London), Jones Day (London), Soho Hotel (London), Ham Yard (London), Crosby Street Hotel, New York and private collections worldwide.
