Wendy Sutherland paints from a place where the external world of moor, trees and sky meet an internal soul-space of memory, sense and feeling. There is an ecstatic quality that exclaims ‘I am alive and the world is a wonder,’ and her work revels in the possibilities of paint and ink. Large and dynamic canvases, layered with great expressive qualities combine with delicate painting. There are smaller more intimate paper works too and both have earned Sutherland a unique and important place in Scottish landscape painting.
After graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 1997, Wendy Sutherland returned to her native Brora and she has lived and worked from there since then. Trees and hills lie to the west and sea to the east. It is a place she loves deeply, and this is woven into every painting.
